Today my heart struggles to find the right emotion to feel as I read and watch the news. Friday the day of our new president being inaugurated, our country shook and was filled with hostile division. I was born in Mexico and came to the states in 1999 with my family, and after years of going through the legal process my family and I became American citizens. I am a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and I've devotedly followed Him since I was 19, I'am now 23.
I'm not someone that dives into politics or argues with someone. I'm the last person to really publicly speak my opinion over the media on such touchy subjects. I only speak when my opinion is wanted. But as I have watched what was happening in America since the elections of 2016 were coming to and end, my heart has had a continuous tug to say something. My intentions in writing this isn't to argue or even tell you my political views. You have the right to have freedom of speech as an American. But I hope out of this letter to whom ever reads it, will touch your soul, change your heart, and how you view your protest against the new change of leadership.
This is to the protesters that were part of the violent riots that happen on Friday, the day of our new President, Donal. J Trump being inaugurated. I have heard your reasons for being against Trump, I've read your petition websites, and have watched parts of the protest although it is painful to watch.
Out of everything that I read the only thing that lingered in my thoughts is this, you don't know love.
Love according to Corinthians 13 is:
"2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails... 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."
I don't know everything, and I'm nothing special, but one thing I have learned and know is love. I've seen how choosing love has triumph over unfairness, rejection, heart break, deception, division, back stabbing, tragedy and anything else that every human has to go through at some point in their life. I've seen that love wins every time.
Trump is not your enemy, He is your President. He is not against you, he is for his American people, you. Let yourself stand together in love. If you are going to protest, protest in love. If you are going to stand, stand in love. If you are going to speak, speak in love. But don't do anything that is not what love is.
Because if you are fighting for love, unity, and acceptance, those who are not oppose of Trump are not getting your message. It goes along with what Christ tells us, don't point out the speck on someone else's eye when there is a speck on your eye.
Matthew 7: 2-4
"2For with the same judgment you pronounce, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye?…"
I cannot tell you not to protest but my hope and prayer out of this is that you take a look inside your heart. I hope that you ask yourself am I fighting with what I'am fighting for? If you are not fighting with love, unity, and acceptance and for the right reasons, I pray that your heart will be changed by His love, because it is only the love of God that can change the way you think, be and do. And if you don't know Christ I pray that you have encounter His love because it will forever change you, the way it forever changed me.
With love and blessings,
A fellow American
